The Specialisation School in Archeological heritage is to deepen the scientific knowledge in the archaeological disciplines and to fit the professional competences oriented to the protection, the conservation and the valorisation of the archaeological heritage.

Research Doctorate

The aim of the Research Doctorate is to train full researchers in archaeology, specialists in conservation, protection and valorisation of the landscape in the public and private sectors.

  • The Research Doctorate in Archaeology – Department of Archaeology in Bologna; Associated Institutions: Scuola Archeologica Italiana in Athens and Universitè Pantheon-Sorbonne Paris I.
  • The Research Doctorate in Archaeological Sciences - Department of Archaeology in Padova. The Department of Archaeolgy of Bologna is one of the Associated Institutions of the University of Padova together with the Scuola Archeologica Italiana in Athens.

Of course you can participate to the archaeological excavations, even during your learning course, because they are the integral part of the didactic education of the Department of Archaeolgy of the University of Bologna.

BESIDES THE EXCAVATIONS, WHAT CAN I DO TO INCREASE MY EDUCATION OF FUTURE ARCHAEOLOGIST?

It is important you know that our Department leads in its different centres 17 laboratories for teaching and research with a total of 124 workspaces concerning the different ranges of the profession of archaeologist: topography and relief of excavation, palaeobotany, archaeozoology, restoration, study and documentation of finds, computer science, multimedia, digitalizing of sources, museography and teaching for schools.

In Bologna you will have the possibility to take the following courses:

Training e stages

During your education years you could attend high formative activities and professional experiences in agencies, institutions and companies associated with the university. Some lecturers of the Department will attend the students engaging this formative path

Summer School

The Summer School originates inside the Center of Studies for the Archaeology of the Adriatic Sea, mainly involving the Department of Archaeology of University of Bologna and the Civic Museum of Drniš (Croatia), both members of the Centre.
The purpose of the course is to supply the knowledges and the instruments to use the most advanced and suitable methodologies for archaeological research.
In order to this aim a stage of frontal lessons and laboratories is activated followed by an applicative phase.
During the Academic Year 2006-2007 the frontal lessons and the laboratories of the Summer School were taken in the Center of Studies of Acquaviva Picena, while the practical activity was executed in the Roman castrum of Burnum in Croatia.

The Center is founded in 2001 with the aim to create an organization for the research, the coordination, the programming and the development of the numerous activities linked with the use of informative technologies of documentation, classification and edition of archaeological information.

ARCHEOflorae - Departmental Center of Archaeobotonical Researches
Founded at the beginning of 2004 in Ravenna as the decentralized centre of the Department of Archaeology of the University of Bologna, intends as landmark of high professionale level for the study of every kind of vegetal and animal evidence in archaeological contents of various typologies and epochs.
The Center comes from the increase of the pre-existent laboratory of palaeobotany either in equipment or in scientific specialization: pollens, phitolits, moods and carbons, seeds and fruits, historical botanic iconography .
If you operate actively you will find in the Department means and opportunities to increase professionally.

Il Centro di Studi per l'Archeologia dell'Adriatico, founded on initiative of the University of Bologna, aims to incentivate the scientific research and to promote the historical and archaeological knowledges concerning the Sea. The development of specific or more general researches concerning the Adriatic subjects, the supply of informative materials, the support to initiatives of protection and valorization of the territory, the print of publications and monographies, the organization of meetings represent only some of the aims to reach.

WHERE CAN I STUDY FINDING SPECIFIC BOOKS?

The Library of the Department is constitued in the three centers of Bologna, Ravenna and Acquaviva Picena by a global book patrimony of more than 80.000 volumes, including monographies and about 900 heads of magazines of more than 300 currents. It is specialized in the sphere of archaeological pre-protohistorical, classic and medieval disciplines. The Library of Casa Traversari, situated in Ravenna, has an important historic patrimony in archaeology and history of Byzantine art, whose increase is also addressed to document the different disciplinary spheres of the archaeological teachings of the Faculty of Conservation of Cultural Heritage.

Moreover very important for a future orientalist archaeologist is the possibility to consult:

The Library Edzard of Assiriology and Archaeology of Ancient Near East.
The personal library of Prof. Dietz Otto Edzard (already Full Professor in Assiriology in the University of Munich) was bought by the CARISBO Foundation and given to the Department of Archaelogy. The library is composed by more than 2100 monographies and 900 volumes of specialized magazines. The donation of the CARISBO Foundation to the Alma Mater Studiorum supplies the University with the basis to develop the Oriental studies, increasing the research in Assiriology and Archaeology of Ancient Near East, that is the study of the epigraphic, linguistic and material evidences and of the cultural bequest of the different civilizations of Ancient Mesopotamia.

By the instruments supplied by the Portal of the Libraries you can consult more than 14.000 online magazines, 100.000 electronic books or, through the project Alma-DL, the collections of didactic and scientific materials of the University.

  • to consult the principal information concerning the libraries of the University
  • the services connected to the catalogues (booking of loans, rescue of researches and bibliographies)
  • the signalling of initiatives of formation for the users promoted by the Librarian System and a tutorial for auto-formation to the librarian research
